Marching Towards Hope: Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month

As Alaska transitions from the winter chill to spring blossoms, March brings an opportunity to raise awareness about a condition that affects millions of lives worldwide.

Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month is observed annually in March to increase understanding, support, and advocacy for those living with multiple sclerosis (MS).

In honor of Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month this March, let’s take a closer look at what MS is, why MS Awareness is important, and what you can do to get involved and make a positive impact.

Understanding Multiple Sclerosis: What Is MS?

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. MS occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of nerve fibers, disrupting the communication between the brain and the rest of the body.

Consequently, MS can result in a wide range of symptoms, including (and not limited to):

  • Fatigue

  • Difficulty walking

  • Numbness or tingling

  • Muscle weakness

  • Problems with coordination and balance

The Importance of MS Awareness

One of the key goals of Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month is to educate the public about the impact of MS on individuals and their families. Increased awareness not only fosters empathy, but it also helps dispel myths and misconceptions surrounding the disease and how its treated

By understanding the challenges faced by those with MS, we can work towards creating a more inclusive, supportive community in Anchorage, Palmer, Alaska, and across the U.S.

How to Get Involved

Showing support for Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month doesn’t have to involve a lot of heavy lifting or consume a bunch of your time. In fact, there are a lot of simple ways you can raise MS Awareness and, in doing so, play a key role in supporting this important cause. Here are a handful of options you can try.

1. Educate Yourself & Others.

Take some time to learn about multiple sclerosis, its symptoms, and the challenges faced by those living with the condition.

Share this knowledge with your friends, family, and colleagues to raise awareness and promote understanding.

2. Support MS Organizations.

Many organizations are dedicated to supporting individuals with MS and funding research to find a cure. Consider making a donation or participating in fundraising events organized by these organizations.

Some well-known organizations include the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) and the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF)

3. Wear Orange.

Orange is the official color of MS awareness. Wear orange clothing or accessories throughout March to show your support.

Encourage others to do the same and share pictures on social media using the hashtag #MSAwarenessMonth.

4. Host Events or Fundraisers.

Organize events in your community to raise funds for MS research and support programs.

Whether it's a charity run, a bake sale, a silent auction, or a virtual event, every contribution makes a difference, and these events can help raise MS Awareness on a local level.

5. Post on Social Media.

Leverage the power of social media to spread awareness.

Share facts, personal stories, and resources related to MS on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and/or your other social media channels.

Encourage your friends and followers to like, comment on, and share your MS awareness posts — and invite them to do the same to exponentially amplify awareness.

How to Support MS Awareness

As March continues, let’s unite in the fight against multiple sclerosis.

By increasing awareness, supporting individuals with MS, and contributing to research and fundraising efforts, we can bring hope and positive change to those affected by this condition.

Together, we can make a difference.
